Workplace accidents have claimed 24 Missouri lives since October

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recently reported an alarming number of workplace fatalities in a four-state region that includes Missouri. According to the agency's records, workplace accidents since October in this area have claimed the lives of 45 employees. Twenty four occurred right here in Missouri. A general contractor with many years of experience noted that, although accidents do happen, on-the-job fatalities are preventable.

It is said that unidentified threats cannot be addressed. For this reason, daily hazard assessments on all work sites are crucial. Supervisors and employees must also keep a lookout for dangerous conditions as they go about their duties. Timely action can save lives.

According to OSHA, the primary causes of workplace fatalities are falls (responsible for almost 50 percent of construction worker deaths in 2014), electrocution, struck-by injuries and collapsing structures or being caught between or in equipment. Every one of these dangers is extensively covered by the safety regulations prescribed by the federal agency. Unfortunately, not all employers prioritize workplace safety.

The fact is that many Missouri workers put their lives on the line every single day to enable them to take care of their families.
