Workplace accidents: Lack of lockout device causes fatal injuries

A worker at an aluminum foundry in Missouri was killed in a recent on-the-job accident. An area director of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration said this was one of many preventable workplace accidents nationwide, and offered the agency's condolences to the grieving family. The agency has launched an investigation into the incident.

Workplace safety: Gun violence threats must be addressed

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act, business owners in Missouri must provide employees with safe workplace environments that are free from known hazards that might cause serious harm or death to employees. Although there are no specific regulations related to the threats of workplace violence, authorities say business owners may start by instituting a zero-violence policy. However, workplace safety can also be threatened by non-employees.

Missouri employees who are exposed to the working parts of machines in the line of duty must receive adequate training about the related dangers. Only when they understand the hazards will workers know how to avoid injuries in workplace accidents. Company owners also have a responsibility to install guards around exposed parts of machines that may cause caught-in or struck-by hazards.

Workplace accidents: OSHA investigates freight company fatality

Due to the variety of products that are typically handled by shipping companies, workers at freight handlers nationwide, including here in Missouri, have to face many hazards that may lead to serious or fatal injuries. An incident at a shipping company in a neighboring state caused the death of a worker on a recent Friday. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration said two other employees of this company also lost their lives as a result of workplace accidents at two separate locations in 2015.
